BMW has been actively considering adding a flagship super car to the lineup. The i8 is currently BMW’s predominant electric sports car. With the 8 Series back in action, it’s becoming the traditional flagship. So far, there has been no official statement that there is a direct replacement for the i8, but BMW has yet to confirm nor deny.
A new super car would add a lot of excitement to BMW’s line up. The inspiration would come from the i8 and could potentially be an indirect replacement for the i8. However, the super car would be significantly priced higher than the i8, far more power and sit comfortably at the top of the M line up.
The super car cam be on roads as early as 2023. This vehicle would have a hybrid powertrain with a gasoline engine and an electric motor. The super car will even have a chassis based off the existing lightweight carbon fiber frame found in the i8. Currently the i8 has a 3-cylinder unit, but we are expected to see the change from 3 to 6-cylinders. The power is expected to be pushing 700hp, which is nearly double the 18 369hp and will exceed the M8’s power.
BMW’s PHEV e-motors can potentially have more than 197hp and even up to 378 lb-ft within the next few years. The BMW super car could easily surpass the 18’s price which is roughly $140,000 and will most likely target hybrid competitor models.
