The future for electric cars is upon us and BMW is ready to go! Our forward thinking company has made great strides in pushing forward with their electrification of The Ultimate Driving machine. In 2013, BMW began production of it’s first Born Electric vehicle, the i3. In 2014, BMW introduced us to it’s hybrid super-car, the BMW i8. This year, they announced that they would have their own factory team in Formula E for the 2018/2019 racing season. What’s coming for one of the largest and most impressive car manufacturers in the future?
BMW has a plan based on the assumption that eventually all or most cars will be electric. Based on this assumption, BMW is planning to make their future electric car designs more of variations of their mainstreamed models.
The first step in BMW’s plan to electrify it’s vehicles is to start with the Mini brand. A battery-electric Mini is set to go into production in 2019. Following the Mini will be battery-electric versions of the BMW x3 and 3 Series. The X3 is expected to debut in 2020.
The first factories to begin building BMW’s electrified vehicles will be the plant in Dingolfing and Landshut, in the German state of Bavaria. These plants will build the Mini’s drivetrains which will then be sent to the Mini UK factory for their final assemply. BMW’s Dingolfing plant is scheduled to build hybrid versions of BMW’s 5 series and 7 series.
BMW has created this plan to take it’s larger competitors head on in the race for the best electric car. Keep your eyes open for the future here at BMW and the big thing this company has planned!
